Had a very enjoyable evening last Tuesday presenting my Regency Talk and Costume Display – Enter the World of Jane Austen Talk for Rothbury WI.
One of the best venues we have ever had. The Rothbury Golf Club is located across the river from the centre of picturesque Rothbury in Northumberland.
We presented the talk and display in a large airy room with plenty of natural light that had a superb backdrop of the rolling hills of Northumberland.
My costume display included reproduction Regency underwear based on extant of the period. A chemise, corset and pantalettes – I illustrated how important it is to wear the correct foundation garments as the true period shape would be impossible to achieve without them.
I also mention to the group that I designed and made a white cotton afternoon dress (included in the display) which didn’t seem to fit me after taking great pains to measure and construct it carefully – I then realised I was wearing my modern bra so tried the dress again with my regency corset and the dress fitted perfectly!
Also included were a morning dress, afternoon dress, evening dress and court gown inspired by Empress Josephine.
I was pleased that one of the ladies mentioned after my lecture that all my references to Jane Austen were absolutely spot on – a lot of the ladies were very keen Jane Austen fans having read all of her novels so I was keen not to make any mistakes!
The ladies all enjoyed our talk and were very interested in various aspects of the costumes and the history of the period. We stayed chatting and enjoying refreshments with the group for quite a while after the talk.
It certainly was a very nice evening – I would like to thank Ros from the WI for all her help with the event and the kind hospitality afterwards – the Womens Institute cakes were delicious.
I would also like to thank my son James for helping to present the event and not forgetting my friend Dave who very kindly did all the driving.
