Wonderful Fashions at the Women’s Institute

Last night we presented a Period Fashion Show for the Northumberland Women’s Institute.

We had a splendid evening. Even though it rained- the lovely ladies from the WI turned out in force.

The Fashion Show was presented in the splendid United Reform Church – the Broadway, Ponteland. A wonderful building in a lovely setting with excellent facilities. It is a spacious, bright and airy building with beautiful large windows which provided natural light.

We were joined by our fabulous model Helen (who is always amazing) and our new model ‘Laura’ – it was her first show with us and she did an excellent job!  Laura became a beautiful Anne Boleyn, she also wore an elegant French Silk Gown and a lavish Masquerade Dress.

Helen inspired as a regal and fabulous Elizabeth I.  She also wore two gowns inspired by Mary Queen of Scots. An extravagant deep turquoise/gold trimmed gown and a red silk dress inspired by clothes Mary wore for her tragic death.

King Henry VIII and King James VI of Scotland also made an appearance wearing ornate and regal outfits.

The evening included a wonderful supper during the interval – the  food included tasty cheese scones and cheese biscuits – all washed down with red and white wine.

At the end of the show we all enjoyed a humorous and informative question and answer session.

We also took part in a photo session for an article in a popular ladies magazine.

I must say it was a real pleasure to talk to so many lovely people during the course of the evening.

Comments received after the show included

The fashion show was really good, I think the combination of the clothes and the historical narrative was great. Your model who played Mary & Elizabeth had a genuine talent for ‘becoming’ the characters which made the costumes more alive. As for Henry – I would just watch your head if I were you. What a talented lot you are”

“What a fantastic evening we had!  Your costumes were amazing and I know the ladies thoroughly enjoyed talking to you all.  Thank you so much for giving us such a wonderful evening”.

“These superb costumes- all handmade by Julia Soares McCormick were dazzling, studded with semi precious jewels and made from sumptuous silks.”

I would like to thank Jenny at the WI for organising the venue and also Hilary and Helene for all their work.

We look forward to presenting more events for the WI in the near future!
